January 8, 2012

I don't know what happened.  I posted this already but it didn't take.  Hmmm.

Anyway, January 8 is the birthday of Elvis.  I searched far and wide for what we could do to honor Elvis.  Since I figured none of us wanted to eat a peanut butter, bacon and honey sandwich I decided to steal a WOD from Manhattan Kansas Crossfit.  They called it "Espied Elvis" but since I have no clue what that means I am going to just call it "Elvis."

"Elvis"
5 Rounds for Time
3 Deadlifts (Rx is 275/185. . . basically go heavy but don't hurt yourself)
5 Pullups
15 Jumping Squats

Jumping squat just explode up into the upright position and leave the floor.  You squat.  You jump.  If you want to do it quickly then drop in a continous motion into your next squat.  When I go really fast on air squats my feet leave the floor anyway so I can imagine this isn't too hard.

Bodyweight WOD
Run 400 meters
25 Situps
10 Burpees

Jonny, if you run this up the road with a towel in your sweatshirt for situps and do those and burpees in the road I will be so proud!  I get looks from kids and some adults when I do my WODs in the park.  I think they are just jealous though.  That is what me must tell ourselves when others stare. . . they are just jealous that they aren't moving their bodies.

Jenn, I read some of your blog and you really put me to shame.  You are so fancy!  I was thinking that I would try to "jazz this up" but ultimately decided I have to "be me."  Your blog is awesome!  I think it is inspiring.  I liked your piece about "trust" with you and Spence.  Nice piece.

In the end my blog is about Crossfit and beer.  I write about two things I love and started doing it for the woman I love.  Just so that there isn't any confusion, that is you Lisa.  I realized that what I love most about Crossfit is the community feel.  I want the blog to feel that way.  Come as you are.  Do your best.  Tell us your thoughts.  This isn't just my show.  All are welcome!

I met some new "Crossfitters" this morning and as always seems to happen I was moved to go WOD with them more often.  An addicting lifestyle, but a healthy one.  Even better these folks are talking about going in on farm shares and ordering sides of grass fed beef to share.  Pretty cool stuff.

  1. Dammit!
I am talking myself into this.
I hurt my hip. Weird spot. 6 months ago. Funnily enough, doing crossfit in the front yard on Kansas Ave. It still acts up when I jump. So, I am going to make an appointment with the doctor Monday. Tomorrow I am going to buy some non-barefoot shoes (ya know, something with cushion) and do a little CF.
Today I "ran" a mile. Remember, don't laugh. I have Spence for that!
I WANT A COW! We are having a cow nightmare here. I paid a deposit months ago. Still no cow. Grrrr... And I WANT RAW MILK. It is 100% illegal here. Cow. Goat. Whichever.
I challenged Spence to get back into CF via your blog when he gets to Gan-stand.
I love your blog. The back and forth with you, Lisa and Jonny (your brother?) is awesome. You reveal much of yourself in your non CF notes.
Thanks for reading mine. It is my therapy. And it is cheaper than the traditional kind. Plus, it doesn't require finding childcare.

  2. Jenn, I hurt my knee. Normal spot. Unknown amount of time ago. Doing who knows what. This is one of the reasons I agreed to start CrossFitting with Gary, to strengthen said knee. This morning, I listened very carefully when I was doing my GAWU (see an earlier post) knee circles and NO CREAKING! No joke. My knee was not creaking and that is amazing.

I LOVE my Five Fingers. I can't wear them much outside here because of all the rocks, but they are really great. I actually don't like to wear my tried-and-true sneakers anymore because it feels like I am manipulating my natural alignment. It's like drinking non-raw milk. It just doesn't seem right. (I'm trying to relate--how did I do?)

Truth be told, Jenn. I hope you rub off on Gary (CrossFit) as much as he rubs off on you (clean eating). Please, please, PLEASE share some more stories of the whys and the hows of clean eating. I tried to get him to consider ordering meats from a local farmer who attends our farmers' market. No go. Have you read The Omnivore's Dilemma? Everyone should. It completely changed the way I view food. Good luck getting your cow.

Where is Spence going? Kandahar? I hear they have a great CrossFit gym. He should definitely do it!

Jonny is Gary's brother. They go way back.

  3. Jenn, your website makes me want to cry . . . in a good way! You have a beautiful soul and it shows on your blog.

  4. Hey, I was all about the grass fed beef in Minnesota when it was plentiful and cost-effective. Pork too. I even used to only buy the antibiotic free chicken. . . Minnesota really has it going on food-wise. My stumbling block is simply the cost. I am working on it though. If this training gig that I am embarking on leaves extra money after the costs of doing it I will reinvest that. The worst part is that I just created a plan to turn the chest freezer into a kegerator that would allow me to have 7 taps. Now you have me wanting to fill it with meat. I think I will go out and kill something. That is the healthiest way. I could go out on a fishing charter and maybe catch a big game fish. I don't know how marling tastes, but tuna and swordfish are good. I would like to shoot an elk, but I just think that they are so cool. Jonny said the same thing about bears. . . he knows there are plenty around him to kill, but he likes bears. Evidently we are very spoiled in this modern world. We don't HAVE to kill our food. I at least want to grow some vegetables. I am going to start them when our company clears out. Those little dirt pits on the retaining wall look perfect for tomatoes. I will figure someting out. If I do it all from seeds I am only out like 2 bucks even if it flops. My plan to build a raised bed fizzled when I got the grass growing. Shoot. Okay, I need to get ready for church. I am the nursery "teacher" as Tessie says today. After church I will WOD and post.

  5. G: You must read The Omnivore's Dilemma. You never responded to my inquiry as to whether you and Jonny were going to go on a book binge; therefore you have lost your opportunity. I have ordered a copy for each of you to be shipped to your respective residences. Because of the free shipping caveat, you'll get another book of my choosing as well. Enjoy. Do me a favor and DON'T plan a deep-sea or wild game excursion until we--you and me--weigh the "adventure" costs against the "let others do what they are best at and pay them their fair share" costs. Okay?

    3 Deadlifts: 95 lbs
    5 Pullups: 6 assisted
    15 Jump squats

Today I convinced one of my new roommates to CrossFit with me. I should have encouraged her to follow me on my GAWU as she spent have of her elliptical warmup fiddling with her iPod. (Curses to iPods, as well. While they are at times motivating--Lady Gaga makes treadmill intervals go so much faster, they are superior time wasters as well.) Nonetheless, she beat me on the WOD (her deadlifts were 45 vice 95 lbs). I told her I'm in there every morning and she is more than welcome to join in! Jump squats burn!

  6. Must see documentaries:
    Food, Inc.
The Future of Food (free to view at hulu.com)

Eating grass fed beef vs. feed lot beef is MUCH healthier for you. http://www.eatwild.com/healthbenefits.htm

Consider taking fish oil daily. Gross? Slightly. But it will cure cavities, decrease your cholesterol levels and keep you from getting sick. Feed it to your kids too.

I don't articulate arguments well. I would have not been a great debate team member! But I will share my words of wisdom when the words jump out from my fingertips. :)

I bought the shoes today. I am going to cushion this hip for a bit and then go back to my Vibrams. I am a fan! And they sell them at the PX now. (If they had them in my size today, I probably would have bought them instead.)

Spence leaves in a day or two so no commitment from me until then. Maybe tomorrow though.

Shoot something! It is healthier and cheaper than the store bought stuff. Or just buy a quarter cow and shove it into the fridge/freezer.

I haven't made grass grow yet. (In Hawaii! Seriously, how hard can it be? I am not a gardener.) I, too, have elaborate plans for a vegetable garden. We will see.

I'm putting Omnivore's Delimma on my iPad tonight.

  7. Jenn: You're an iPad person? Hmm, I was going to send you two books, I think. Should I send them to you electronically? Can I do that? I tried to post to your blog today, but the government computer wouldn't cooperate with me; I'll try again tomorrow. Please let me know about the books and your preferred format--and probably how to send it in your preferred format. Enjoy your time with Spence before he rolls!

  8. Jenn: Oh, and I bought Gary some StrongerFasterHealthier fish oil for his birthday! That's right, I'm romantic. . . .

  9. I think it is a great gift regardless of romantic punch. . . I don't want something if it isn't useful. I am great at buying equipment but not so great at the supplement/fuel portion of the program. We are getting there. The Girls and I had nut and berry medley for breakfast. Strawberries, blueberries, almonds, macadamia nuts. Gwen had a banana. Baby steps. . . enough of them equal 26.2

  10. 26.2. A secret goal.

I read them on paper or electronically. I would say whichever is cheaper. To send it electronically order via amazon.com/kindle and gift it to jennandspence@gmail.com.

For Spence's Christmas gift I bought him organic, grass fed, humanely cared for bacon. And for his deployment - fish oil tabs. We, too, are all romance.
